  • DIRECTOR / PARTNER

I was trying to think back to the first time that I contemplated becoming a film/video director. I honestly don’t know when it started. I used my first point and shoot camera at 8, I bought my first digital camera at 15, and I bought my first prosumer camera at 17. I have always had a deep love of storytelling. Film and video production allowed me to pursue that as a career.

Professionally, I really started out as a true generalist. DP by day, editor by night. It was this broad view of the filmmaking industry that began to draw me to directing. My understanding of pacing from the edit influenced my decisions with camera movement, or talent blocking. A knowledge of the capabilities of a camera allowed me to create unique movement.

As a 15+ year veteran of the Film & TV world now, I have had the privilege of leading multiple award winning teams through every level of production. Whether is was producing a feature film over the course of a year, or racing to finish an ad for Sunday Night Football, I have always relished the challenge and the reward of being a Film/TV Director.

Why “541” you ask?

It’s a reference to a pretty wise guy who said, if someone asks you to go one mile, go two. That idea of “going the extra mile” has been our through-line for over 20 years of combined industry experience. It’s a pretty radical thought in an entertainment industry famous for egos, but we found that serving the story and people we work with first isn’t just a healthier way to live, but makes for better videos and experiences, too.

  • CREATIVE PRODUCER / PARTNER

I first got the “filmmaking bug” in middle school making viral “brickfilms” as a YouTube partner and it’s been a wild ride ever since. When I went to one of the top-ranked film schools in the country at Biola University I had no idea what in film I exactly wanted to do, I just knew I wanted to do all of it. So I did. From ACing to sound… art to editing… before really falling in love with directing and producing (which means I still get to do a bit of everything); I love taking projects from beginning to end and empowering more talented specialists to breathe life into a story.

During the first ~5 years of my professional career in Los Angeles I got to represent the Producers Guild of America (PGA) as a College Ambassador, worked with some A-list actors, produced or directed dozens of projects (including two features!), helped build a startup that specializes in influencer/genre/and VFX content… and it feels like everything in-between. But, Raleigh was always home in a way and I can’t wait to bring the connections and lessons learned on the Best Coast back to North Carolina!

Built to partner

Whether you’re an agency or run a marketing office at your company and need some backup, we have unique flexibility and resources in Raleigh to help you tell your story…

  • Unlike other Raleigh video production companies with bloated teams and the overhead that comes with a physical space, as a director/producer-led company, we believe in streamlining costs so more budget goes directly on screen.

  • We got into this because we love to tell stories that change someone’s life, if even in a small way. Whether we’re making a short film or a 30-second TV commercial, we pride ourselves on prioritizing story and artistry first.

  • Unlike many other Raleigh video production companies that hire a full-time staff of generalists, we believe in central NC’s talented freelance community. That means we can hire cinematographers, camera operators, VFX artists, etc. with specialized skillsets tailored to the story and scope of your project.

In other words, it makes us more versatile and gets you better quality for the price.

  • In some cases they might work really well (and we’re down to chat with you about that!), but in our experience, retainers usually incentivize creatives to put in as little effort for you-the client-as possible and take the time you pre-paid for in bloated meetings and uninspired projects. Instead, we take every project’s budget on a case by case basis. That means our long-term client relationships are built on earned trust, because we’re incentivized to make each project better than the last so you still want to work with us.

  • Whether you need a commercial for national TV or a local ad, we own the tools to bring your story to life.

Cinema cameras or lenses? Got it. Grip & Electric equipment? Check. Check out some of our toys on the rentals page.

And, for those really big-budget or specialty shoots, we have great relationships with local Raleigh and national rental houses to source the tools needed to tell your story.

  • We both have extensive entertainment experience in larger markets including Los Angeles, New York, and Boston AND have local roots to Raleigh. That makes us a unique player in the Raleigh video production market; we offer the quality of a big-market production with the benefits of local resources.

Services we offer

Creative Development

  • At Disney’s Imagineering they call this “Blue Sky.” It’s where we brainstorm and generate seeds that can grow into full concepts…

  • Writing for a 30 second spot takes a very different skill set than writing a feature. Lucky for you, we’ve done both and know a host of other talented writers when we recognize someone else’s voice would better fit your story.

  • A single piece of concept art can be the most important part of your project. It’s how entire lands at Disney theme parks were sometimes approved. So, when you or your team just need to “see it” before greenlighting, we love the opportunity to work with artists.

  • Whether we’re pitching to you or helping you pitch a concept we develop to your organization, creatives like us in the commercial space live and breathe pitch decks.

  • Through all of this, we’re keeping your brand identity at the forefront and make sure all the creative choices from script to the piece of clothing an actor wears serve your story and match your brand.

Pre-Production

  • As local Raleigh filmmakers, we already have a head start on some of the best studios and locations around NC. And, when we travel for productions, we can sometimes scout fully remotely since we know what to look for. Besides making sure a spot looks great on camera and fits your story, we also look out for accessibility, parking, permitting and airspace restrictions, amenity access, sun-position, weather risk, sound, power limitations, etc.

  • The most important decision a director makes is who to cast. Selecting the wrong actor for the part can ruin an ad. We have relationships with local and national agencies to find the right talent for your ad.

  • Getting kicked out of a location or–even worse–fined because you don’t have the right permits is never fun or ok. Every region is different and we can help you get the clearances and permissions to film.

  • We’ve scheduled and managed sets of all sizes from local ads to feature films to a Mr. Beast video with over 700 people on set in one day. No matter how big or small, there’s always more details to plan than you think, but that’s part of the fun for us.

Production

  • What does a producer do? Even veteran Hollywood producers struggle to answer that. We like Pixar producer John Walker’s metaphor of balancing an upside-down pyramid in our palm by its pointy tip. Except, it’s even more active than that. As producers, we’re the people that generate things and keep the ball rolling. We’re self-starters, initiate every phone call, solicit every meeting, and pull the strings to make magic happen.

So, that means guiding the ship and making everything on this list of services come alive. Or, sometimes we’ll just come on a project to produce a specific aspect of the pipeline. (e.g. We’ll line produce production or only handle post production!)

  • The most compelling stories are organized by a single artist that effectively communicates a vision to clients, actors, crew members, editors, etc. with honesty and decisiveness. Peter and Andy both have years of experience and portfolios of award-winning projects under their belt. It’s hard work, but it’s also one of the most rewarding jobs ever.

(And, while we’re putting this here under Production, as directors we’re involved in every part of the creative process over the entire life of the project.)

  • It’s a thankless job keeping everything on schedule and organized, but time is money. Andy has AD’d 2 feature films, several commercials, and even a day with over 700 people on set.

  • We love working with our freelancers and have worked with talented artists across the world from Los Angeles to Singapore.

Whether you need crew local to North Carolina or talent flown in across the country, we would love to help build your team.

  • Check out our Rentals page for the toys we like to share!

Post-Production

  • Producing for editorial means making big decisions. Whether we’re keeping the footage local or building a team of artists from around the country, editorial is where it all starts.

This is where we take all the pieces of footage, sort it, and assemble it to tell an engaging story. After the picture is “locked,” then we can move on to the rest of post…

  • Planning for this really begins in pre-production, but if your project needs visual effects, we have relationships with some of the best VFX artists that have worked with influencers like Zach King and on movies like Avatar: The Way of Water. Whether your project needs something simple like sky replacements or fully CG elements integrated to your footage, we can meet the needs of any production.

  • They say half your “video” is sound, and it’s often the thing that most separates poor from high production value. Whether we’re mixing for internet viewing or a DCP for theaters, we have the tools and contractors to hit that perfect, immersive mix.

  • This is often one of our clients’ favorite steps; when the colors really pop after looking at grey footage it’s truly magical.

Like any good colorist or post team, the color conversation starts in pre-production so we can ensure your project fits the right color space and technical specifications for where audiences will actually see it.

  • For most commercials today, music from a library often suffices. But, when we can, we love to work with composers who craft unique and original soundscapes for our clients. Whether you need an indie folk sound or a professional studio orchestra, we’re lucky to know some amazing artists.

  • Once all the assets are in place, we export to the exact specifications you need for broadcast, internet, projection, etc.
